Small business owners are not taking advantage of the Internet to increase sales according to In2town. With the research that In2town media recently did, they found that small business owners failed to market their products and services online due to the cost that can be incurred. The public relations company also found that small business owners did not understand how powerful a press release can be and did not understand the impact they can make.

Password security is in the news, but are you into password security?

Password security is in the news, but are you into password security?  }:{  A search of what’s now trending and what’s news on this topic will inform that password security experts know well how to identify the problem, but what they don’t know is how to get the average user like you and me to pay attention to the problem, or prevent the problem in the first place.

The #Abercrombie fiasco this week is another example of PR people failing to direct their organization in handling a negative story.

#abercrombie : not saying ‘sorry’ is trending

A dormant, unattended site is negative PR

How many times have you clicked on a social media link at a website only to find that there is little or no recent content at the end of the link? Happens all the time, right? Perhaps more of us should write comments at these sites to draw attention to the dormancy? That may work to raise attention of anyone is attending the comment stream.

This is my opinion posted on my FLIPBOARD : Social Current See : http://flip.it/Z4xJn.

Enjoyed making a simple comment and giving some input via LINKEDIN to an eager job-seeker for a PR position, John Saleh, a recent graduate of Bangor University.

For the curious, Bangor University is a Welsh university based in the city of Bangor in the county of Gwynedd in North Wales. It received its Royal charter in 1885 and was one of the founding Member institution of the former federal University of Wales. }:{ http://goo.gl/vA00s

Contrary to the title of this blog, here is one of the prime reasons I choose not to totally follow my own admonition to EXIT EVERYTHING. Great experience to give solicited counsel to one who is in the same place I was more than two generations ago.

Washington State’s Employer Social Media Password Bil

Just passed and awaiting the governor’s signature is Washington State is a statute tackles the social media ownership question by excluding accounts that are “provided by virtue of the employee’s employment relationship with the employer .. [or] online account[s] paid for or supplied by the employer.” Earlier versions of the statute had more specific definitions for what constitutes a social network. One iteration also limited the private right of action. See also : http://goo.gl/YXdi5 ANY GIVEN WORD

Social Media : Do Not Enter without an EXIT Plan

Social Media : Do Not Enter without an EXIT Plan …  This idea (hence, this post) was prompted by the recent but belated discovery that a connection that I had for over four decades had passed away three years ago without my knowledge.

While I was curious why his social media sites on LINKEDIN and TWITTER were void of updates for some time, little did I realize that his not being alive any longer was the reason.  Logical enough, but how would I have known without notification from someone else?  He had remarried and moved out of state and I had retired about that same time in January 2010.  Hence, while our social media links remained, they became dormant and useless.

Most of us don’t think about this reality.  We also don’t plan for others to either manage, assume control, or erase our social media or Internet footprints after we are gone.

This is of specific concern for individuals, but it rises to a different level for corporations and organizations.  In the case of my friend, his firm was and is still well- and primarily-identified on his social media sites.

Through a mutual friend, I contacted a principal still with the former firm of the deceased to find that the organization was not aware of these residual footprints for their former partner.  The firm has effected the closing of the deceased account, but I am curious how many others are so afflicted with this type of problem?

The moral of the story may be that don’t plan to have a social media ENTRY policy unless you also have an EXIT PLAN, even if that is not prompted by a death, just a change of interests.
